Treatment & Prevention

Treatment and Prevention of Hepatitis C:

The good news is that Hepatitis C is now a curable disease. In the past, treatment was very difficult and patients needed long injections with painful side effects. Today, thanks to modern medicine, Direct-Acting Antivirals (DAAs) are available.

Treatment Options:

  • DAAs directly attack the virus and stop it from multiplying.

  • The treatment usually lasts 8 to 12 weeks.

  • Cure rate is more than 95% if taken correctly.

  • Common medicines include Sofosbuvir, Ledipasvir, Velpatasvir, Daclatasvir.

  • In advanced cases with liver failure, a liver transplant may be required.

Prevention Tips:

Since no vaccine is available, prevention is the key to controlling Hepatitis C. Important measures include:

  • Never share needles, syringes, or sharp objects.

  • Ensure all blood transfusions are tested for HCV.

  • Use sterilized equipment for tattoos, piercings, or dental treatment.

  • Avoid sharing personal items like razors and toothbrushes.

  • Use protection during sexual activity to reduce the small but possible risk of transmission.

  • Pregnant women should get tested to prevent mother-to-child transmission.

Complications if Untreated:

  • Chronic Hepatitis leading to lifelong infection.

  • Cirrhosis (severe scarring of the liver).

  • Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).

  • Complete liver failure.

Hepatitis C is a dangerous but completely curable disease. With awareness, early testing, safe medical practices, and modern treatment, we can protect millions of people from this silent killer. Public health campaigns and education are necessary to reduce the spread of the virus worldwide.
